Ghazal of the Phoenix
To: Siamak Salehinik
What a tumult you raised with those sweet fingers
what is the song of Venus and the Pleiades worth beside your melody
Your voice so delights me that I dance by day and by night
how could the magic of your spring-scented instrument tell day from night?
You are a phoenix that took wing from a fistful of ashes
and soared, wings spread, higher than the falcon
Now shake out your sleeve over sorrow, O my poor soul
for the giver of joy is coming: drink of his sweet wine
The terror of Alexander’s prison has left my mind
for with you I spread my wings over the flower-adorned mountains.
